With so many untouched spots of nature in Sabah, it would be a shame not to take advantage of it, and experience natural scenery at its finest.
Overview
Meet Mount Trus Madi, the second highest mountain in Sabah and Malaysia (2, 642 masl). Although pale in height to its neighbour Mt Kinabalu, Mt Trusmadi trail is steeper, more raw and considered tougher. Dubbed 'Terus Mati' by the local, it is truly a challenging trek and suited for the adventurous.

Mt. Trus Madi is a home to a complex ecosystem, along the trails, hikers can easily spot an array of species of nepenthes (pitcher plants), Orchids and many other flora. One species in particular, “Nephenthes Trusmadiensis” can only be found in this region. It is a true haven for naturalists and wildlife photographer.
At the summit of Trusmadi, if the skies are clear, you will get an amazing view of adjacent Mount Kinabalu as well as all the surrounding Borneo Highlands.

If you have climbed Mt Kinabalu before, you should re-visit Sabah and climb Trusmadi. If you haven’t, why not test your physical and mental endurance, local says if you can succeed to summit Trusmadi, you are definitely ready for Mt Kinabalu (fitness wise). It’s a different environment, a different terrain, a different view, which will give you a whole new experience in itself and one that is worthwhile.
The resthouse (locally known as Sulap Khiong) at ~1800m provides the hiker with sturdy shelter to protect from the rain and equipped with kitchen hut and toilet, eliminating the need to bring bulky and heavy camping tents and heavy supply of food and cooking equipments. Do bring a sleeping bag to keep yourself warm at night and a pair of earplugs in case your mates are having night orchestra ;D
Difficulty Grade 3-3.5 (https://www.liveopenly.net/adventures-unlimiteds-trail-grading.html)
Good fitness level and previous hiking experience (especially in Malaysia rainforest trails) is highly recommended. The trails are steep and require usage of ropes/climbing ladders under the cover of darkness.
