The Itinerary
Day 1 : Srinagar to Aru Basecamp On arrival at Srinagar, drive to Aru Campsite (2433m | 100km | 3.5hours). The journey is a scenic and breathtaking experience, with the road passing through the lush green meadows and forests of the Kashmir Valley, and the River Lidder flowing next to it. The journey truly captures the essence of natural beauty and the majesty of the Himalayas. This is an acclimatization day with a possible short trek around Aru Valley. Camp overnight at Aru Campsite. |
Day 2: Aru Campsite to Lidderwat
Trek Summary: 10 km | 6-7hours | 400m EG | 2426-2783m The journey from Aru Campsite to Lidderwat is a journey into the heart of nature. This is an easy to moderate trek through the rolling slopes of Lidder Valley with an gradual uphill ascent. The trail along the River Lidder connects to the village uphill and leading to a cluster of fir trees before arriving at large clearing, Dalla. From here, it is a pleasant walk on the trails through clusters of fir trees and dense pine forests. After a second fir forest, we finally reach the pristine lush green meadows of Lidderwat. |
Day 3: Lidderwat - Shekwas Trek Summary: 6 km | 6-7 hours | EG 582m | 2783-3365m The trek starts with a mild gradual ascent before turning turn flat. The trail then diverts into several smaller valleys converging upwards towards the Bhakarwal Shelters by the right side of the river. We then descend to the river bed and tackle the river-crossing by overcoming a few boulders and crossing a makeshift bridge. The scenic trail leading to the undulating meadowland of Shekwas is engulfed in snow-patched mountains and green valleys. This, is one of the best camping sites of the Tarsar Marsar trek. |
Day 4: Shekwas to Tarsar Lake Trek Summary: 5km | 4hour | EG 430m | 3365-3794m The trek for this day starts from Shekhiwas Meadow and is a moderate ascent over the incline meadow of Tarsar Valley - to get a glimpse of the gorgeous Tarsar, the beautiful almond-shaped lake. An exciting lake trek starts here, crossing the stream with the help of fastened rocks and boulders and then finally on the grassland of Tarsar - our campsite for the day. The past days of long hiking is all worth it, as we see Tarsar turns into a mystical shade of turquoise blue at night against the glistening snow-covered mountains. |
- If there is heaven on earth, it is here. It is here. - Jahangir
Day 5: Tarsar Lake to Marsar & Sunder Sar Lake
Trek Summary: 5km | 5 hours | EG 155m | 3794-3946m We start the trek with a one-hour ascent to cross the ridge parallel to Tarsar Lake, followed by a descend and a pleasant walk before ending with a gradual climb. This perspective of the pristine Tarsar Lake is spellbinding - as you walk along the stream on the unspoiled and lushest grasslands. We then cross a stream with the help of boulders, and a short ascent through a narrow valley before arriving at the ridge top. The trail to Marsar & Sunder Sar Lakes is a more gradual ascent, and as you walk, the landscape changes from dense forests to rolling meadows dotted with wildflowers. When we reach the beautiful grassy land of Sundersar Lake, we will camp here for the night and enjoy the serene beauty of Kashmir. |
Day 6: Sundersar - Lidderwat Trek Summary: 9 km | 7 hours | EL 800m | 3946-4024-3505m This is a gradual descent through the valley of Tarsar and Homwas, but with some challenge at part of the trek when we ascend through the boulder zone and need to be cautious of snow over the boulders. We trek along the shore of Sundersar Lake to get through two passes before reaching Marsar. The high pass is an amazing grassland with gentle trails leading to the flat grounds below. Next, descend to Sundersar and spend some time at Sundersar valley before ending at Jagmargi valley - where we will eat, camp and retire for the night. |
Day 7: Lidderwat to Aru Valley
Trek Summary: 13 km | 7 hours | EL 1079m | 3505-2426m Descend from Homwars to Lidderwat to Aru, where you can spot the Kolahai Glacier along this enchanting trek. Take a break at the Lidderwat pine forest before heading back to Aru. Vehicles will be waiting at Aru to send you to Srinagar for an overnight houseboat stay. Day 8: End of adventures Early morning after breakfast, drive to airport for flight home! |
