Java island is a home of many mountains, a number of them are still active. The rich fertile land you see around the regions are results of these volcanic activities. It is no wonder that many Javanese is good at hiking and there is a fascination with mountain bagging, where you try to complete as many as climb-able peaks around the island. In this edition we will visit 3 well known "Peaks of Java"
Gunung Semeru, 3676masl (grade 3)
Known as ‘Mahameru’ or the ‘Great Mountain’ by the locals, it is the highest peak in Java and one of the most active volcano in Indonesia. What stands out most about this mountain is the fact that it erupts periodically, every 10-20mins, belching out out a huge cloud of steam and smoke, interspersed with ash and stones. Surrounded by greenery, panoramic views of Java and the turquoise blue of Ranu Kumbolo Lake, it is truly a stunning view. Train hard though as its trail is challenging, as difficult as Rinjani some say more. Along with Argopura, the trek into the base of Semeru’s volcanic cone is often considered one of the finest in Java.

BROMO (2329masl) & IJEN (2799masl), grade 2
A visit to Bromo Ijen is a chance to see the natural highlights of East Java.
The adventure will bring you up close to two of majestic volcanoes of Java, the Ijen Crater and Mount Bromo. The top of Bromo can be easily reached via 250+ concrete steps, making it one of the most accessible active volcano in the world. Experience the magnificient sunrise from the viewpoint overlooking Bromo crater, take a 4×4 jeep on an off road adventure through one of the most beautiful national parks in Indonesia and visit the beautiful Madakaripura Waterfall located just nearby.
After Bromo, we will make our way to a night adventure of Ijen. Be mesmerized by the blue flames of Ijen that can be seen if the timing and weather is perfect, it is said that they resembles electric thunder within the fogs. When the sun is up, a turquoise coloured acidic lake (largest in the world) can be spotted in the distance. A beautiful yet deadly, with a pH lower than car battery, capable of dissolving a metal.
Along the way, you may come across the local sulfur miners, Ijen being one of the last remaining Sulfuric mines in the world. Day after day, they make the arduous trek up Ijen’s 9,000-foot slopes under the cover darkness before descending another 3,000 feet into the crater, where a network of man-made ceramic pipes funnels the gases responsible for precipitating elemental sulfur.
