and much more!
Here are just some sights and treks that you will come across during the road trip. The full itinerary will be given to confirmed participants.
The Hobbiton The community seen in the Lord of the Rings films is a place anyone can visit. This set lets you have drinks at the Green Dragon, show off your moves under the Party Tree, and potter about like a faithful hobbit. All the lush pastures are there to enjoy. Alexander Farm is where the movie set was constructed, but it's like each building was meant to be there. The feeling that visitors receive is like what happens when you come home after a long and stressful day. |
Tongariro Alpine crossing One of the best hikes in New Zealand takes you to the fiery depths of uncertainty that LOTR presents as Mt. Doom. Walking across the Tongariro alpine crossing ensures beautiful views throughout the entire experience. It is an alpine biome with a volcanic environment, making this destination one of the most diverse landscapes in the world. Who would have thought it was possible to just walk into Mordor? |
Pinnacles Track Sheltered from the prevaling westerly winds by the Rimutaka and Tararua ranges in the south-east of the North Island of New Zealand, the Wairarapa region has a warm dry climate. It was one of the first areas that the settlers of Wellington explored for farmland. This short walk takes you to the Putangirua Pinnacles and the Pinnacles Lookout. These eroded pillars make up the Dimholt Road that Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli took when they first encountered the Army of the Undead. Great loop with a rocky river up to the beautiful pinnacle formations and a walk through the woods up to the viewpoint. |
There is only one word for New Zealand - EPIC!
Bear Grylls
Hooker Valley Track Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is a rugged land of ice and rock. The dramatic pinnacle of Aoraki/Mount Cook is backdrop to many aerial shots in the trilogies The track leads up the Hooker Valley and along the Hooker River, ending at the glacier lake, where there are amazing views of Aoraki/Mount Cook on a clear day. Along the way you will cross three swingbridges and encounter picturesque icebergs, glaciers and majestic mountains that will have you reaching for your camera at every turn. |
Rob Roy Glacier Track The Rob Roy Glacier is a small hanging glacier in the Southern Alps of New Zealand's South Island. New Zealand might offer mighty mountain peaks and beautiful green valleys, but it is also home to active glaciers. This hike takes you right to the alpine zone of Mount Aspiring National Park. See dramatic alpine landscape with awesome views, meadows, cliffs, waterfalls, rivers, and glaciers. You can listen and watch for different signs of movement while listening to the calls of the kea, the mountain parrots, who call this area home. |
Routeburn Track (1 Day) One of the most popular Great Walk in New Zealand. A moderately difficult high-mountain traverse that links Fiordland and Mount Aspiring national parks. The Northern Fjordland backcountry comes alive with this heart-pounding adventure through steep switchbacks, taking you above the tree line to see Hollyford Valley in all its glory. Lake Mackenzie provides stunning emerald and blue waters that feel like you’ve reached paradise! |
Fiordland, ladies and gentleman. What a spectacle. Earth destination number one.
Stephen Fry
Milford Sound Milford Sound is probably one of New Zealand's most well-known scenic attractions. The length of Milford Sound from the head of the fiord to the open sea is approximately 16km. Milford Sound by its origin is fiord, having been carved by a glacier. Some may argue that the place is best seen on a rainy day as all the waterfalls can be seen in their full glory. Many recommend seeing it during a sunny day and in the rain to see both worlds as they are both very different and amazing |
Arthur’s Pass (Avalanche Peak) A visit to this national park delivers a landscape of two possibilities. When you look to the east, you’ll see vast forests filled with beech trees and rivers. Turn to the west, and you’ll find yourself in a dense rainforest with stunning gorges carved by rushing waters. Starts with a beautiful but strenuous walk through the woods while finishing with climbing on and over rocks and provides spectacular views on the way up and down. Expect steep and rugged terrain. Even if you don’t make it to the summit you still can see the beautiful panorama and glacier. |
Glenorchy – Paradise Road Located on the Glenorchy – Paradise Road between Glenorchy and Paradise is rich in natural character. This scenic drive includes film locations from LOTR, Wolverine, Prince Caspian and stunning natural scenery. In LOTR, This happened to be the location of Isengard seen when Gandalf approaches Saruman’s tower. A beautiful drive through the mountains |
I’ve got to say God really outdid himself down here.
Bob Harper
