Embrace the Sacred Beauty of China

Qingdao ranks as one of China’s most livable cities with its notable monuments and artistic approach to life. Taishan serves as the gateway to the sacred mountains. Then there is Tsinan (Jinan), a community of historic prominence that features over 70 artesian springs. Join us on this unique journey where we embrace the tradition of a New Year’s climb.

What makes Qingdao so unique is that it was originally a German colony. You will see stunning European colonial buildings as you explore the many wonders of the city. Our arrival gives us this opportunity to explore some of the city’s most famous places, including the Badaguan Scenic Area and Zhanqiao.

Then our attention will shift to stunning Laoshan Mountain, or Mt. Lao, and its stunning scenic area. This tall peak faces the majestic Yellow Sea, and it features over 220 points of interest to discover. The mountain itself is the tallest coastal peak in China, rising to a height of 1132m.

As our journey progresses, we will seek to climb Taishan, challenging the 6,666 steps from the Red Gate to the South Heaven Gate. Then we’ll finish the trek by summiting Jade Emperor Peak at 1545m before resting and relaxing from the invigorating climb.

We will follow up that experience by getting to walk along the Great Wall of Qi, which is the oldest existing section of this global wonder.

Construction began in 685 BC, and the current areas are at least 2,500 years old – even if some places look like they have received some minor restoration over the years. The Changging section stretches out for 98 km, going across almost 300 mountain peaks.

Additional stops during this New Year’s adventure include Baotu Spring Park, the Hongijalou Cathedral, and Qushuiting Street, the latter which has a history that goes back to the 4th century Northern Wei Dynasty.

Qingdao (青岛; Qīngdǎo; also known as Tsingtao), is regarded by some Chinese as one of the most beautiful and cleanest cities in China. With a population of around 3.5 million (8 million regional) it is one of the largest cities in Shandong Province. The name Qingdao means The Blue/Green Island. In 2011, the China Institute of City Competitiveness named Qingdao China's most livable city.

Jinan (济南) is the capital of Shandong Province (山东省). It is also known as the City of Springs (泉城) because of the many natural springs supplying the city with fresh water.

Mount Lao (LáoShān 崂山) Scenic Area, situated just 30 kilometers east of ShiNan Central Business District, is one of Qingdao City’s top tourists destinations. As the cradle of Taoism in China and known in traditional Qingdao folklore as the home of immortals, Laoshan soars 1133 meters above sea level. Mount Lao is dotted with green tea terraces at lower elevations that produce some of China’s finest teas.

Mount Taishan is the most famous sacred mountain of China, with exceptional historic, cultural, aesthetic and scientific value.  Settled by humans as early as the Neolithic (a Dawenkou site is nearby), the mountain has been worshipped continuously throughout the last three millennia.  A large and impressive rock mass covering 25,000 ha and rising to 1,545 m above the surrounding plateau, Mount Taishan is considered one of the most beautiful scenic spots in China and was an important cradle of oriental East Asian culture since the earliest times.

The mountain was an important object of the cult worship of mountains even before 219 BCE, when the Qin Emperor, Huang Di, paid tribute to the mountain in the Fengshan sacrifices to inform the gods of his success in unifying all of China. On the mountain there are 12 historically recorded imperial ceremonies in homage to Heaven and Earth, about 1,800 stone tablets and inscriptions, and 22 temples, which together make Mount Taishan the most important monument in China, a world-renowned treasure house of history and culture.
