Fellowship to the Roof of Africa – Kilimanjaro

Raising the flag high on a mountain summit is always fun and memorable. Even more it is, when we get to raise our SINGAPORE flag high up on the summit to celebrate the National Day,

In 2017 and 2018, we had several teams that set off as National-day week expedition. The Yogyakarta Team made it to the summit of Mount Merapi on the morning of 8 Aug 2017. The Japan Team on the other hand, made it up the summit of Mount Fuji on 9 Aug 2017, flying the Singapore flag at the height of 3,776 meters (12,389 feet). In 2018, the Kili team despite facing difficulty with AMS, managed to bring up the flag on 07 Aug at Stella Point, 5, 685 meters, the highest thus far.

This 2020, we aim to finish the mission and fly the flag even higher at the main Uhuru's Peak, 5,895 meters of Kilimanjaro, one of the 7TH SUMMIT OF THE WORLD

Everything is possible, if you put your mind to it. Come join us and our energetic host, Sucan for a wonderful expedition to Kilimanjaro, and mark your first or the Seven Summits. Let the journey begin!

Overview

Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and fourth highest of the Seven Summits, is definitely in the bucket list of all hikers.

Not just because of its status in the charts, but also because of its prominence as the tallest FREESTANDING MOUNTAIN in the world, rising 15,100 feet (4,600 meters) from base to summit.

Elevation: 19,340 feet (5,895 meters)
Prominence: 19,308 feet (5,885 meters); most prominent mountain in Africa.
Location: Tanzania, East Africa
Our Route

Out of the seven main routes used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, for this trip we will be taking the Machame route. Machame is possibly the most scenic route to the summit, boasting several variety of terrain ecounters to its highest point and back. While en route to Uhuru, the path will leads you through magnificent forests before traversing a ridge leading through moorland to the Shira Plateau and Alpine desert. It offers great scenery beneath the glaciated precipices of the southern ice fields before summiting from the higher Barafu Camp.

To have have a better acclimatization and higher summit chance, we will opt for 7 days instead of the shorter 6 days hike.

Why do we choose this route?
✓ Good acclimatization
✓ Higher success rates
✓ Beautiful sceneries
✓ Varying landscapes
✓ Variety of terrain

The Terrains

The terrains on Kilimanjaro falls into very clear categories. The lower altitudes are forest, the middle is heather and moorland, and the top is basically desert.  It's easy to tell when crossing the terrain boundaries.
Picture
Zone 1 : Lower slopes, cultivation & Savanna (altitude: ~2500ft - 5900ft
Zone 2: Montane Forest (altitude: ~5900ft - 9200ft)
Zone 3: Heath and Moorland, Low Alpine zone (altitude ~9200ft - 13,000ft)
Zone 4: Alpine Desert (altitude ~13,000ft - 16,400ft)
Zone 5: Arctic Tundra/Ice Cap Zone (altitude above 16,400ft)
While this route offers steeper inclines, it is also a route that offer beautiful views and considered one of the higher chances of success rate of reaching the summit without spending too many days (and much higher cost)
